Lab Research Outside CoC
If you intend to do research for credit in a laboratory outside of the College of Chemistry (e.g. other departments or units at Berkeley, UCSF, LBNL, or other institutions), please complete the following steps:

  1. Fill out the College of Chemistry Undergraduate Research Form
  2. Chemistry vs. Chemical Engineering units: Chem Eng H194 or Chem Eng 196 units shall be limited to research work supervised by members of the CBE faculty, defined as ladder-rank, lecturers, and adjuncts. If you are doing work supervised by a faculty member outside the department and wish to get Chem Eng units for it, you must find a CBE faculty member to formally co-advise and sponsor this work. Otherwise, you should select Chemistry 196 or H194.
  3. Have your faculty (or equivalent) research adviser sign the research form. Your form cannot be signed by a graduate student or a post-doc. Please let your faculty/supervisor know that you are doing research for academic credit, and enrolling in a course that will require her/him to report a letter grade at the end of the semester.
  4. Email completed form to Maritsi Perez: maritsip@berkeley.eduAllow 3-5 days for processing and your enrollment information will be emailed to you.
  5. Enroll in the course through Cal Central by the fifth week of classes. You will be enrolling in a research section under Undergraduate Dean John Arnold, your instructor of record.

Receiving a Grade

  1. At the end of the semester, you must submit a short report summarizing your work and results. Have your report signed by your research faculty/supervisor and turn it in by email to cocugdean@berkeley.edu or to Maritsi Perezmaritsip@berkeley.edu
  2. At the same time, ask your research faculty/supervisor to send a short email to Undergraduate Dean John Arnold (cocugdean@berkeley.edu) with her/his suggestion of your final letter grade reflecting your performance in research over the semester. The email must include your name and course number.

Any questions regarding procedures: contact Maritsi Perez: maritsip@berkeley.edu

CPT (Curricular Practical Training)
CPT is a type of off-campus work permission for F-1 international students who are currently pursuing study programs in the United States and want to gain experience in their fields of study. CPT is not available after a student completes a degree program. CPT is an academic experience, and is not intended to be used for regular on-going off-campus work. Go to the Berkeley International Office's (BIO) web site for more information about CPT criteria and eligibility.

To receive credit for CPT, bring the completed Undergraduate Field Study Form (which must include the signature of your CPT supervisor), a completed CPT Request form (available on the BIO web site), and your offer letter to your adviser for review and approval. Your adviser will issue a class number for enrollment in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering 197. A one-page summary of your CPT experience, signed by your supervisor, will be due at the end of the term in which the CPT is completed.

Please note the following:

  1. Chem and Chem Eng 197 units must be paid for
  2. Units are for P/NP only

Internships
In some circumstances, students may wish or need to receive credit for an internship. To receive credit for your internship, bring the completed Undergraduate Field Study Form (which must include the signature of your internship supervisor) and your offer letter to your adviser for review and approval. Your adviser will issue a class number for enrollment in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering 197. A one-page summary of your internship experience, signed by your supervisor, will be due at the end of the term in which the internship is completed.

Please note the following:

  1. Chem and Chem Eng 197 units must be paid for
  2. Units are for P/NP only
