Application process

We accept applications once per year for a fall semester program start. The application process opens in September and is due in early January for Fall enrollment. Admission decisions will be available by the end of February. The program is listed under M for Master of Bioprocess Engineering Program.

Candidates are required to provide evidence of the following to be considered for the program.

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Transcript from every post-secondary school ever attended.
  • Minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale.
  • 3 letters of recommendation.
  • A Statement of Purpose and Personal History Statement.
  • If your GPA was not based on a 4.0 scale, you must convert it to a 4.0 scale and provide the conversion in your application materials.
  • Minimum TOEFL score of at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT) or 570 for the paper-based format (PBT), if appropriate OR a minimum IELTS overall band score of 7 out of 9.

UC Berkeley undergraduate students are highly encouraged to apply!

Candidates who possess degrees other than a bachelors in Chemical Engineering may be required to demonstrate how their work experience or other coursework provides a sufficiently strong foundation to undergo this master's degree.
