CHEM 1A and 1AL

General Chemistry and General Chemistry Lab for College of Chemistry students without AP Chemistry

Prerequisite: High School Chemistry is recommended, but not required.
Note: If you took the Chemistry AP Exam and scored 4 or 5 on it, please enroll in CHEM 4A.

  • CHEM 1A and 1AL may be taken concurrently or in different semesters. If taken separately, 1A must be taken first, and passed with a C- or better for the student to be eligible to take 1AL.

CHEM 4A

General Chemistry for Majors

  • Only College of Chemistry majors may enroll in CHEM 4A through the end of Phase 2. If you wish to take 4A and you are not a CoC student, enroll in CHEM 1A and 1AL. When the Adjustment period begins, you may try and swap out of 1AL and into 4A. It is suggested that you swap 1AL for 4A, because if the swap is unsuccessful, you will still be enrolled in CHEM 1A.

CHEM 12A

1st Semester Organic Chemistry for Majors

  • Only College of Chemistry majors may enroll in CHEM 12A through the end of Phase 2. If you wish to take 12A and you are not a CoC student, enroll in CHEM 3A and 3AL. When the Adjustment period begins, you may try and swap out of 3AL and into 12A. It is suggested that you swap 3AL for 12A, because if the swap is unsuccessful, you will still be enrolled in CHEM 3A.
