Overview
The Chem Scholars Program strives to promote and advance the educational and career opportunities of students that may benefit from extra learning support in the fields of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. This is done with organized tutoring/study group sections for some of our core courses including general, organic, and physical chemistry, and for the first upper-division gateway course in Chemical Engineering. Each group is facilitated by two Chem Scholars Educational Leads who also provide mentoring and community-building opportunities. Chem Scholars Educational Leads have successfully completed the specific course that they facilitate and use interactive learning as a core principle of the program. This is explored through collaborative learning, mind maps, small group work, discussion of key concepts, and developing effective study strategies for the course.
Applications for the program open each Fall and Spring semester before school begins. If accepted into the program Chem Scholars attend the weekly sessions for 1.5 hours to receive support for their class.
Chem Scholars study group/tutoring sessions are held for the classes below:
- Chem 4A (F) 4B (Sp)
- Chem 12A (F) 12B (Sp)
- Chem 120A (F) and (Sp)
- CBE 140 (F)
- CBE 150A (Sp)
The Chem Scholars Program is committed to helping increase the retention and success rates of students in the College of Chemistry and those from groups historically underrepresented in chemistry, chemical engineering, and other science fields.
