Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is pleased to announce that Professor Christopher J. Chang, of the University of California, Berkeley, USA, will be appointed as Editor-in-Chief of Accounts of Chemical Research, a journal that presents short, concise and critical articles offering easy-to-read overviews of basic research and applications in all areas of chemistry and biochemistry.
Beginning in 2024, Professor Chang will build upon the excellent success and leadership of Professor Cynthia J. Burrows, who has helmed the journal since 2014. Accounts of Chemical Research covers a wide range of molecular sciences by communicating research stories and emphasizing the importance of chemistry in a format that's digestible both for experts and a broader audience.
"I'm profoundly excited and proud to serve as the next Editor-in-Chief for Accounts of Chemical Research," said Professor Chang. "Together with an excellent team of editors, I will aim to broaden engagement, participation, and representation in the journal by embracing the people and projects that drive science forward across the globe."
Professor Chang has served for nine years as a founding Senior Editor and then Deputy Editor for ACS Central Science, as well as on numerous Editorial Advisory Boards for ACS journals, including Accounts of Chemical Research. He has received recognition with prestigious awards throughout his career, including the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2021, Humboldt Research Award in 2020, Blavatnik National Award in Chemistry in 2015, and the ACS Nobel Laureate Signature Award in Graduate Education in 2013.
"We're thrilled to welcome Chris Chang as Editor-in-Chief for this key journal that provides such great insight to the broader scientific community," said ACS Publications Senior Vice President and Chief Publishing Officer Sarah Tegen, Ph.D. "His contributions toward building ACS Central Science into a must-read open access journal demonstrate the energy and vision that he will bring to leading Accounts of Chemical Research."
Chang is the Class of 1942 Chair Professor of Chemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology and Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute Member at the University of California, Berkeley, USA; Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; and Adjunct Professor at University of California, San Francisco, USA. He earned his B.Sc. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from California Institute of Technology, USA, and his Ph.D. degree in Inorganic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
Professor Chang's primary research focuses on the study of metals in biology and energy, developing chemical sensors and catalysts to address problems of broader societal interest from medicine to climate change. His prior work has shown that transition metals are not merely active site cofactors in proteins but can also serve as dynamic, allosteric regulators of protein function, launching a field of transition metal signaling.
