Discovery Program for Transfer Students

Discovery Learning Course for Incoming Transfer Students

The College of Chemistry (CoC) offers a one-credit, seminar-style course exclusively for incoming transfer students, Chem 102: Foundations of Discovery Learning for College of Chemistry Transfer Students.

Students who enroll in this course will be guided to develop and engage in discovery learning experiences, such as undergraduate research, industrial internships, K-12 educational outreach, or STEM entrepreneurial pursuits. These experiences help link chemistry content to real-world situations and push students to engage in high levels of thinking.

This course is also designed to assist students with their transition into the CoC through:

  • discussions around best learning and study practices, stress management, CoC coursework, and careers
  • interactions with the CoC community, including personalized mentorship from transfer peers, graduate students, and faculty

Students will continue to receive mentorship and support from the course instructor during the spring semester following their completion of Chem 102.

The College of Chemistry Transfer Student Mentorship Program (CoC TSMP)

The Transfer Student Mentorship Program (TSMP) is a program founded by CoC graduate students to facilitate the transition of transfer students to the CoC. At the heart of this program lies one-on-one mentorship between transfer students and current chemistry graduate students. Through this mentorship, your mentor can help answer questions such as:

  • How do I apply for a position in a research lab?
  • What does a career in chemical research entail, and how do I know if it’s right for me?
  • What is it like studying chemistry in a PhD program, and how can I best prepare now?

Additionally, this program hosts 6 meetings throughout the semester covering these topics and more in further detail. These meetings are informal and designed to encourage community building between the incoming transfer student, senior transfer student, and graduate student classes.
