Current Job: Process Development Engineer, Izote Biosciences, Berkeley, CA

Javier grew up between Caracas, Venezuela, and Houston, TX, where he was immersed in the world of petrochemical manufacturing from a young age. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 2020 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. After 2 years working on a variety of chemical processes ranging from pilot-scale polymerization to commercial hydrogen synthesis from methane, he decided to pivot towards the field of biomanufacturing. He joined the UC Berkeley Master of Bioprocess Engineering (MBPE) program with the 2022-2023 cohort hoping to contribute to the decarbonization of the chemical industry by leveraging the tools of biology. He now works for a Berkeley start-up company called Izote Biosciences as the lead bioprocess engineer. His work centers around building novel microbial fermentation processes that hold the potential to improve the techno-economics and scale-up fidelity of industrial biotechnology.
