A tiny speck of plutonium on the UC Berkeley campus is making news for its connection to a momentous point in history. The sample was created by a team of scientists led by the late Berkeley chemist Glenn Seaborg. The synthesis of plutonium helped Seaborg earn a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1951.

Ann E. Pitzer (M.S. '60, HomeEc), a trustee of the Pitzer Family Foundation, died of cancer on October 15 at the age of 77. She lived in La Jolla and Kelseyville, CA.

Thursday, Oct. 9, College of Chemistry Dean Douglas Clark inaugurated the Que Family Undergraduate Advising Center. Located next to the Chemistry Plaza on the ground floor of Gilman Hall, the center consists of four offices for quiet discussions between students and their advisers, an area where students can consult with peer advisers, and a well lit modern commons area where they can read, relax and hold study sessions.

Chemistry professor Carolyn Bertozzi will take the helm as editor-in-chief of the American Chemical Society’s first fully open-access journal, ACS Central Science. The new journal is set to launch in early 2015.

The Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry (BCGC) has won two major grants. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded more than $335,000 to BCGC and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control for projects to help businesses and manufacturers reduce hazardous chemicals in consumer products.

Professor Robert E. Connick, esteemed professor emeritus of chemistry and alumnus of the College, has died at the age of 97. He passed away peacefully at his home in Kensington, CA, on Thursday, August 21.
