The College of Chemistry offers a service that
is not offered by most other colleges at Berkeley.
If you submit required documents by the end of May, you
will receive a written evaluation of your transfer
work and a recommendation on courses to take in the
Fall at Cal Student Orientation (CalSO) in
June.
Following is important information on these
topics:
To make your transition to UC Berkeley as smooth
as possible, it is important for you to know which
degree requirements you have already satisfied
and which courses you should take during your first
semester here. We will evaluate your transfer credit
for satisfaction of degree requirements after we
receive the information requested below.
As soon as possible, you must request that
current official transcripts in
sealed envelopes from
all colleges/universities you have attended be
sent to the below address. (PLEASE DON'T WAIT
FOR SPRING GRADES TO BE POSTED. HAVE THE TRANSCRIPTS
SENT NOW WITH SPRING GRADES MISSING.) Please
note that transcripts sent to the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions will not reach me; and transcripts
sent to me will not reach the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions. Therefore, you must have separate
transcripts sent as instructed by both offices.
If you completed
any course work outside of California, you must
send course descriptions to the below address.
Please send the college/university catalog which
includes course descriptions or send photocopies
of the following: pages from the catalog which
include course descriptions, the academic calendar,
any other relevant course information, and the
front cover of the catalog. (PLEASE DON'T CUT
OUT INDIVIDUAL COURSE DESCRIPTIONS; PLEASE DO
SEND THE ENTIRE CATALOG PAGE.)
Fill out the following
forms available
on the web
and send the forms to the below address:
If needed to verify satisfaction of the Foreign Language Requirement (for Chemistry and Chemical Biology
majors), request that an official high school transcript be sent to the below address.
The above items should be sent to:
Sandy Rehling
University of California, Berkeley
College of Chemistry
420 Latimer Hall # 1460
Berkeley, CA 94720-1460
Important note: If the information requested
above is not received by the end of May, there is no guarantee
that your transfer credit will be evaluated in
time for you to begin enrolling in classes at Cal
Student Orientation (CalSO) in June.
CAL STUDENT ORIENTATION (CalSO)
At CalSO:
You will be given information on which degree
requirements you have already satisfied and which
courses we recommend you enroll in for the Fall
Semester.
You will receive the new College of Chemistry
Announcement which lists degree requirements.
Note: Recent versions of the College of Chemistry Announcement
are available
on the web.
You will begin enrolling in classes using Tele-BEARS,
UC Berkeley's course enrollment system.
If you
will not be attending a CalSO program, it is important
that you notify CalSO as soon as possible via their
web site http://calso.berkeley.edu. Students who don't
attend a CalSO program will receive an evaluation
of their transfer credit from us in July.
Those who have a good excuse for not attending
a CalSO program should be able to begin enrolling
in classes at the end of Phase I of Tele-BEARS.
Students who are not deemed by CalSO to have a
good excuse (or who do not notify CalSO) will probably
not be able to begin enrolling in classes until
Phase II of Tele-BEARS.
ORGANIC CHEMISTRY COURSES TAKEN AT A COMMUNITY
COLLEGE
Students who complete a year of organic
chemistry (lecture and laboratory) at a community
college will be given credit for satisfying Chemistry
112A-112B if they pass the American Chemical Society
(ACS) Organic Chemistry Exam with a score in the
75th percentile or higher. Note: The College of
Chemistry no longer accepts results from the 1994
and 1998 versions of the ACS Organic Chemistry
exam.
To those students who take the American Chemical
Society (ACS) Organic Chemistry Exam at their community
college.
No matter what score you receive on the
exam, you are required to ask the instructor offering
the exam to write a note on letterhead stationery
to include the following information:
student's
name
exam name and version
exam score and percentile
exam date
name of the college where the exam was taken
instructor's signature, name, title, telephone number, and e-mail address
As soon as possible the instructor should
mail the note to:
Sandy Rehling
University of California, Berkeley
College of Chemistry
420 Latimer Hall # 1460
Berkeley, CA 94720-1460
To those students who have not yet taken the American
Chemical Society (ACS) Organic Chemistry Exam
You
can take the exam at UC Berkeley (tentatively scheduled
for Monday, August 24, from 8 to 10 a.m.). If
you plan to take the exam at UC Berkeley, please
send an e-mail notification to Sharon Mueller (smueller@berkeley.edu)
and check back with her closer to the date of the
