Microanalytical Laboratory
The Microanalytical Laboratory performs CHNS analysis. The results of routine CHN analysis are usually available in 3 working days. In addition, the Facility offers an open access ICP Optima 3000 DV instrument. Questions regarding microanalysis should be directed to Ms. Elena Kreimer at krel@berkeley.edu.
Sample requirements: 5 mg of sample should be submitted. Samples should be solid (oils will work too). No solvents must be present.
Analysis: The Perkin Elmer 2400 Series II combustion analyzer is equipped for determination of %C, %H and %N. It also has the capacity for determination of %S. Sulfur samples are run every other week. Air sensitive samples are being analyzed on Thursdays and Fridays. Samples submitted by 9.15 a.m. on Thursdays will be analyzed by 5 p.m. on Fridays. If a sample will react in air within 10 minutes, it must be submitted as an air sensitive sample.
Submission form: You can obtain submission forms in the Facility (8 Lewis). Be sure to answer all the questions on the sheet and to label your sample and sheet with the same sample code/number. You can also download a submission form here.
Sample drop off/pick up: There is a basket in 8 Lewis marked "CHN Analysis". Tape your sample to the submission form and put it in the basket. Upon completion of the analysis, your data and sample will be placed in the Mass Spectrometry Annex, next to 8 Lewis, according to your faculty advisors name.
