| The facility, which is a combined mass spectrometry and
microanalytical facility,
is located in 8 Lewis Hall and is open from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
Monday through Friday. The manager of the facility, Dr. Ulla N. Andersen,
and the staff spectroscopists, Dr. Zhongrui Zhou, Ms. Elena Kreimer and Dr. Rita Nichiporuk,
are there to assist you with your requests.
The mass spectrometry facility operates with two different fee
structures. Ask your advisor whether your research group has a membership
or pays pr sample. Only members of the facility have access to the
GC/MS, LC/MS and MALDI open access instruments.
When submitting a sample for analysis, make sure that your submission
form is filled out completely and carefully. Taking the time to
fill out your request will expedite your sample analysis and will
help the staff make the right decisions about how to analyze your
sample. Incomplete submission forms will be returned without sample
analysis! Below are a few guidelines and helpful hints to assist
you:
Submission form
You can obtain submission forms and sample vials in the Mass Spec.
Lab. Be sure to answer all the questions on the sheet and to label
your sample and sheet with the same sample code/number. Remember
to obtain your research advisor's signature if he/she has stipulated
that his/her group needs a signature before analysis. You can also
download a submission form
here.
Sample drop off/pick up
There are baskets in 8 Lewis marked according to the ionization
technique requested. Tape your sample to the submission form and
put it in the appropriate basket. Upon completion of the analysis,
your data and sample will be placed in the Mass Spectrometry Annex,
next to 8 Lewis, according to your faculty advisor's name. Sample
turn-around-time is between one and three days for low resolution
FAB. Check with the spectroscopists for turn-around on the other
techniques as they are performed less frequently. After-hours drop-off
of samples can also be done in the Annex, using the appropriately
labeled slots. |
