Research and Facilities : Mass Spectrometry Facility : Air Sensitive Samples

Air sensitive samples for EI analysis need to be supplied in special capillaries and sealed off. See the lab personnel to obtain these. Sample requirements for air sensitive EI analysis are the same as for regular EI samples: 50 micrograms (µg) to 1 mg max. One or two good-sized crystals should be enough. If you are uncertain, ask. Air sensitive samples requiring FAB need to be organized with one of the staff spectroscopists. In general, you will be given a small amount of a non-protic matrix, which you can bring into your glove box for degassing. Your sample and matrix are mixed in the box and the mixture is then brought down to the lab and given to the spectroscopist. These samples can often be handled in air for a short time, in which case they can be prepared and analyzed immediately. IT IS IMPORTANT that you set up a time for analysis with a staff person ahead of time. Air sensitive samples can be analyzed by ESI. Sample preparation and instrument setup are very critical. Please contact Dr. Ulla N. Andersen if you need to analyze an air sensitive sample by ESI.
