Chemistry professors Michelle Chang and Naomi Ginsberg have both won Young Faculty Awards from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Each award is for $300,000 over two years.
Chang’s winning research proposal is “Synthetic Biology Approaches to Cellular Nanomaterials,” and Ginsberg’s is “Beneath the Bulk: Domain-Specific Efficiency and Degradation in Organic Photovoltaic Thin Films.”
The objective of the DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA) program is to identify and engage rising research stars in junior faculty positions at U.S. academic institutions and to expose them to Department of Defense needs as well as DARPA’s program development process.
Jay Schnitzer, office director of the DARPA Defense Sciences Office, added, “DARPA recognizes the real need to provide research support for our most talented young scientists at a crucial phase in their career while enabling them to address riskier, more difficult research problems than they might otherwise be able to do.”
