Berkeley chemists Paul Alivisatos and Peidong Yang have won honors from the Materials Research Society. Alivisatos, the Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, won the Von Hippel Award, the society's highest honor, for “for the development of the fundamental scientific basis for growing and utilizing defect-free colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles, providing the basis for biological imaging, solid state lighting and the capture and conversion of solar energy to electricity.”
Yang won the MRS Medal for “outstanding contributions in the creative synthesis and assembly of semiconductor nanowires and their heterostructures, and innovations in nanowire-based photonics, thermoelectrics, solar energy conversion and nanofluidic applications.”
The awards will be presented on Wednesday, November 40, at the society's annual meeting in Boston, MA.
