In its latest rankings of graduate chemical engineering programs, U.S. News and World Report magazine has ranked Berkeley’s Department of Chemical Engineering second nationally, behind first-place MIT but ahead of Caltech in third. Another UC campus, Santa Barbara, was ranked ninth.
Says ChemE chair Jeff Reimer, "These rankings affirm that the ChemE department at Cal is amongst the very best places to study engineering."
ChemE also recently celebrated the start of the new school year with its awards for outstanding Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs).
Ryan Balliet, Colin Cerretani, Ting-Ying Chung, Albert Keung, Joe Swisher and Will Vining received the department’s Outstanding GSI Award, bestowed by ChemE professor and Head Graduate Advisor David Graves.
In addition, ChemE graduate students Rajamani Gounder and Jarred Ghilarducci have received the Dow Excellence in Teaching Award from Dow Chemical Company representative David Parks. The Dow award includes a cash prize.
Graves, who replaces Prof. John Newman as the Head Graduate Advisor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, is teaching ChemE 230 (Mathematical Methods in Chemical Engineering) with visiting professor Doraiswami Ramkrishna from Purdue University.
