Reimer appointed new chemical engineering chair
Bell to serve as interim chair
Chemical engineering professor Jeffrey Reimer has been appointed as the new chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and will assume the chairship on July 1, 2006. Professor Alexis Bell, a former department chair and college dean, will serve as interim chair, effective April 1, 2005, while Reimer completes a year-long sabbatical leave.
Reimer has recently served as Associate Dean in the UC Berkeley Graduate Division, and has been honored for his excellence as a teacher, having won the the highest award bestowed on faculty for their teaching: the Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award, in addition to numerous other teaching awards. His research focuses on developing spectroscopic techniques that to study materials chemistry and processing. With a specific emphasis on solid state NMR and magnetic resonance imaging, a major component of his research plan is the construction and application of new hardware (such as NMR probes) to solve complex materials science problems in the areas of catalysis, electrochemistry, and semiconductor and polymer processing.
Bell is the current chair of graduate admissions for the department and has a long history of service to the department, college and campus. From 1979-1981 he served as the Assistant Dean of the College of Chemistry
and from 1981-1991 as the Chairman of the Department of Chemical Engineering.
He was Dean of the College of Chemistry from 1994-1999. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Bell works in the field of heterogeneous catalysis and is
recognized as one of the pioneers in developing in situ spectroscopic techniques
and isotopic tracer techniques for the study of catalyzed reactions.
