Chemistry professor emeritus Harold Johnston has a new book in print, A Bridge Not Attacked: Chemical Warfare Civilian Research During World War II. The book, published by World Scientific, tells the story of young chemists involved in secret research on poison gases in academic institutions. It presents an almost forgotten history of secret war research by academic chemists working on chemical warfare at Caltech and Berkeley. Johnston himself was a participant in the work and has accumulated a large number of writings and photographs from the 1940s. Hal Johnston has received numerous prizes for his work in atmospheric chemistry, including the National Medal of Science.
