Announcement from the Provost about the new Dean FACULTY,
STUDENTS, AND STAFF
It is my pleasure to announce that Chancellor Berdahl is recommending to the Regents the appointment of Charles Harris as Dean of the College of Chemistry, effective July 1, 2005. Dean Clayton Heathcock has kindly agreed to continue as Dean for an additional year until Professor Harris begins his tenure as Dean. Professor Harris earned his B.S. degree in 1963 from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in 1966 from M.I.T. Following his Ph.D., he spent a year as an Atomic Energy Fellow in theoretical physics at M.I.T. before joining the College of Chemistry here in 1967. His research centers around the use of femtosecond lasers in the visible and infrared to study the mechanisms and dynamics of chemical reactions in liquids and in a second area the dynamical properties of electrons at interfaces and surfaces on ultrafast timescales. He is the author of over 200 papers and has been widely recognized in his field with many awards and honors including Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science (1997); Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2001); and Member of the National Academy of Sciences (2002). He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society and the Association for the Advancement of Science.
