1. Chemistry Library Winter Closure
The Chemistry Library will be closed from December 20th through January 4th. Hopefully the Chemistry Library after-hours access will be functioning and online resources will be sufficient until the library reopens on January 5th.

If you need library assistance on December 22nd or 23rd, please use one of the other UCB science or engineering libraries. After the 23rd almost all UCB libraries will be closed through the 4th. A complete listing of libraries and hours for this time period will soon be posted at http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/AboutLibrary/hours.html.

2. Elsevier Negotiations Update
UCOP has created a website for faculty about current publisher negotiations at

http://libraries.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/negotiations.html.

The following is from the update of 11/26/03:
"As of this writing good faith negotiations between the University of California Libraries and Elsevier for a systemwide subscription to ScienceDirect Online are continuing. Negotiations will result in either a systemwide subscription to Science Direct Online that is acceptably affordable for the short term or in access to a highly selective set of journals.

The libraries remain hopeful that it will be the former. The libraries are grateful for the level of support and engagement from UC faculty in this negotiation. Regardless of the outcome of the negotiation the hard work to create more sustainable models for scholarly communication will remain. The libraries, faculty and senior administrators must remain committed to strategic planning and action that address the unsustainable nature of the current dominant models. Such efforts must extend well beyond the results of a single negotiation for scholarly content, whose results by definition are limited in scope and time."

3. STKE Access
You now have IP access to Science's STKE (Signal Transduction Knowledge Environment) website at
http://stke.sciencemag.org/. STKE presents original perspectives, reviews, and protocols as well as access to the STKE Virtual Journal, the Connections Map database and discussion forums. The cost of STKE for UCB is being shared by the Chemistry Library, Engineering Library and Bioscience Library.
