Specialty Gas

Specialty gases are ordered through the college purchasing unit:

Click here to access the online gas order form

This is a new web-based form which replaces the Excel spreadsheet specialty gas order form.  You’ll need to use your CalNet authentication to access the form.  After which, page 1 opens with a list of Praxair Specialty Gases sorted alphabetically.  Click the “Form Help” button in the upper right section for form instructions. Your requester information will populate automatically based on your CalNet Directory information.  Please make any needed changes to this information prior to submitting your order.  Also, please note that special mixes require a quote from Praxair and toxic gases require a copy of the current EH&S clearance. After completing this form, you must print it, obtain the signature of your PI and submit it to the relevant fund manager, who will take the order to purchasing.

Specialty gas orders receive priority ordering by purchasing. Please note that Praxair will deliver standard gases within 24 hours, but some specialty gases can take 2-3 weeks for delivery. Please plan accordingly.

Stock gases (argon, hydrogen, compressed air, nitrogen, and oxygen) and Specialty gases (ordered from Praxair) are stored in card-key controlled cages in B84 Hildebrand Hall (south end). To check out or return a cylinder:

  1. Scan your college ID card in the card reader and check that the default Speedtype is the one that should be charged. If your default Speedtype is not correct for this transaction, or if there isn't a default Speedtype established for your ID, please scroll on the touch screen on the left and select the appropriate PI and then the appropriate Speedtype on the right. It is very important that you select the correct Speedtype.
  2. On the touch screen, select either Return or Check Out. The doors will unlock - you will hear a clicking sound.
  3. Open cage door - they are very tough to open! Unchain cylinder wanted and bring to reader station.
  4. Scan the bar code on the cylinder using the reader wand. Check to be sure the data is reading on the screen.
  5. Make sure remaining cylinders in the cage are chained.
  6. Close cage door and log out.  Make sure you hear a locking sound before leaving.

To check out a dolly to transport the cylinder to your lab, see receiving staff in B84A Hildebrand. They will hold onto your College ID until you have returned the dolly.
