Hany Eitouni won the Merck Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. Eitouni (above) is a graduate student with chemical engineering professor Nitash Balsara.

Kenneth Raymond, professor of chemistry, will receive the Howard Vollum Award for Distinguished Accomplishment in Science and Technology from Reed College, his alma mater, in August. The award recognizes achievement by scientists in the Pacific Northwest.

Richard Saykally, professor of chemistry, was the Royal Society of Chemistry 2001 Centenary Lecturer, for his "original contributions to the high resolution spectroscopy of molecules, including his recent determination of the structures of water clusters."

F. Dean Toste, incoming assistant professor of chemistry, received the Nobel Laureate Signature Award for Graduate Education in Chemistry from the ACS, sponsored by Mallinckrodt Baker, Inc., for work done at Stanford University (we'll forgive him) as a graduate student with Barry Trost.

Dirk Trauner and Alexander Katz have received ACS Petroleum Research Foundation grants for 2002. Trauner, assistant professor of chemistry, is working toward the synthesis of specific antibiotics and natural products. Katz, assistant professor of chemical engineering, will study heterogeneous catalysts.

Peidong Yang, assistant professor of chemistry, has received a $240,000 young investigator grant from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation to study semiconductor nanowire arrays. Only 16 such grants were awarded nationwide this year. Yang has made headlines lately for several recent breakthroughs in nanotechnology.
