Alpha Chi Sigma
The Sigma Chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma, or AXE for short, is a coed professional chemistry fraternity serving the Berkeley campus and has collaborated with the College of Chemistry for several recent events. During Cal Day this spring, members of AXE led tours of the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering labs. The photograph shows Arneh Babakhani leading such a tour. This was the first year such tours were offered during Cal Day and the response was overwhelming. Members also spoke during an information session giving prospective students and their families an undergraduates perspective of the College. Members of AXE also spoke with incoming freshmen during the Colleges welcome week information session. During the talk, we announced the start of a tutoring program. This generated a lot of interest and brought people to our booth at Calapolooza. The tutoring program now has about 10 members paired up with students offering one to two hours a week of one-on-one tutoring, primarily in lower division chemistry classes, and has been very successful. Some of our future plans include running a booth at CubFest, a carnival-type activity for young children during Homecoming weekend. We are also running a booth at family science night during National Chemistry Week. This is a yearly event that takes place at various local middle schools. Alpha Chi Sigma is group of people who share a common interest in chemistry. Not to worry, we are a very social bunch too, and are known to have barbeques and throw parties. American
Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE
brings in companies such as Chevron, Dow, and Clorox to hold information
sessions. In addition, many companies give presentations on campus to
recruit students for permanent and summer jobs. We also assist chemical
engineering undergraduates by encouraging interaction between faculty
members and students. It sounds as though we work hard, and we do, but
we also know how to relax. We sponsor many social activities as well
as an ultimate Frisbee team. Iota
Sigma Pi The aim
of Iota Sigma Pi is to stimulate interest and accomplishments of women
in the chemical fields. To this end, ISP hosts many events, including
discussions with professional and academic chemists, research talks,
social events, career workshops, and outreach opportunities. We recently
held a joint lunch with the Women Chemists Committee and special guest
Chemistry Chair Judith Klinman, and a brown bag lunch with Graduate
Division Dean Mary Ann Mason. Events and meetings of Iota Sigma Pi are
open to all interested individuals. Check out our bulletin board outside
419 Latimer for event listings and contact information or see http://www.cchem.berkeley.edu/~iota |
