by Alumni Association Chair Steven F. Sciamanna Greetings Fellow Alumni,
More than ten years have passed since I joined the College of Chemistry Alumni Association Steering Team in March of 1993. It has been over seven years since I assumed the role of Chairperson, taking over from Bruce Stangeland in February 1996. Well, it is time (ok, maybe long past time) to pass the baton to another chairperson. In doing so, I have (of course) become nostalgic and have dug through my notes to 1993 to recall some notable accomplishments and events. We have started three era alumni groups in my tenure as chair: "The Cupola Era," "The Free Radicals" and, most recently, the "The CHEMillenniums." Shortly after I joined the Steering Team, Curt Munson (Ph.D. '85, ChemE) and I spearheaded the infamous Alumni Survey. I remember reading some really interesting responses from our alums of their pleasant and not-so- pleasant recollections of their college days. Then there was the Ice Cream Social organized by Paul Bryan (Ph.D. '85, ChemE) in the spring of 1994, where alums challenged grad students and faculty to produce the tastiest creation. (Paul won.) Other noteworthy events include our hosting the Career Networking Forums and Job Fairs in the spring of 1997 and 1998. In the new millennium, we have co-sponsored three "Berkeley in Silicon Valley" events, and our most recent venture with MIT, Stanford and Berkeley Engineering, the ten series Nanotechnology forums, all with excellent participation by faculty and alums. Some of our initiatives, such as the mentoring program (which was followed by an on-line version), have come and gone but they served a need at the time. Through these years we have had a presence at many of the college-sponsored AIChE and ACS meeting receptions, college graduations and Cal Day events. Our Alumni Association has played an important role in maintaining connections and re-connecting our alumni to each other and the College of Chemistry. During these ten years, I have had the pleasure of making new friends and working with very dedicated people. Some I have previously mentioned above. Others, such as Scott Clarke, Tom Delfino, Tom Dietsche, Reyes Fragoso, Lara Gundel, Sophia Hayes, Ken Hulet, Fred Lam, Florence Lin, Bob Lindquist, Ali Mansouri, Laurie O'Conner, Carolyn Orelli, Ron Quezon, Lindy Vejar, Sheila Yeh and Michael Yang, have generously given of their time and expertise. Thank you for all of your work. Of particular note are Bud Blue (B.S.'34) and Daisy Quan (B.S.'47), who have served on the board since the Alumni Association began in December of 1991 and continue their involvement to this day. Three of our new members will be providing future leadership and direction to the steering team. They bring with them enthusiasm, new ideas and fresh perspectives. I would like to introduce the new chairperson of the Alumni Steering Team, Rebecca Zuckerman (Ph.D.'00, Chem) and her co-chairs Marissa Drouillard (B.S.'00, Chem) and Deanne Krenz (B.S.'94, Chem; Ph.D.'00, Agr. Chem). In closing, I would like to thank our college deans, currently Clayton Heathcock and previously, Alex Bell and Brad Moore. They have always been a supportive and active interface to the alumni steering team. Most importantly, I would like to thank the two people that are the heart and soul of the alumni steering team, namely, Alumni Relations Director Camille Olufson and Assistant Dean Jane Scheiber. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with them and for their friendship. Their dedication and drive is what makes everything work. Please join me in supporting the college and our new steering team leadership. Go Bears! Steven F. Sciamanna, B.S. '79, Ph.D. '86, ChemE
